Adult-Counseling-michelle-cox-denverDo You Feel Like Something Just Isn’t Right In Your Life?

  • Have you suffered a recent loss and find it hard to concentrate or stay focused? You may become frustrated as your mind always ends up thinking about the loss, no matter how hard you try to stay on track.
  • Do you find yourself constantly thinking about a specific worry or fear – unable to turn off the “tape” that seems to be on an endless loop?
  • Is it difficult to shake that “unsettled” feeling as you go through a major life change or transition? You may not know what your next step will be or how it will turn out.
  • Are you aware of a feeling of unhappiness or dissatisfaction in your life, but you can’t quite put your finger on what the problem is?

The truth is that there are certain times in life when we all face something that seems bigger than we are. Struggling and tired, knowing we need to make a change, we search for a solution. You may have come to realize the resources and tools that worked well for you in the past aren’t as effective with your current situation or problem. You may have never faced anything like this before, and you aren’t sure you have the skill or tools to manage it. If this sounds true for you, then adult counseling can help. It’s important to recognize that now is the right time to reach out and partner with an experienced therapist who can provide the guidance, expertise and support you need to help find your way and work through your challenges.

Adult Counseling Can Help You Learn to Manage …

… Grief or Loss

Loss comes in many forms and inevitably involves a life transition. You may be going through a divorce or the loss of a job. Perhaps you are passing from one life stage to another, or are realizing you have to let go of a long-held dream. You may be trying to cope with the death of someone you have known or loved, or an animal that has been your loving companion. All losses hold grief for us. By engaging in adult counseling it is possible to find the resilience to come through your grief, to a place where you can heal.

 … Anxiety or Stress

Anxiety and stress are not unusual to experience – they can occur when you face a deadline, a challenge or an alarming situation. But when you are unable to effectively manage your anxiety and stress, they can begin to affect your daily life. You may experience excessive nervousness, apprehension, worry, fearfulness and uncertainty, potentially accompanied by disturbing physical symptoms such as a pounding heart or upset stomach. The good news is that it is possible to find relief. You can learn new skills to reframe your patterns of thought and belief, regaining control of your thoughts and feelings. Adult counseling provides an opportunity to gain insight into the root causes of your stress and anxiety, helping you reclaim a more peaceful, balanced life.

… Depression

Depression can feel like a constant state of unhappiness, like you have to push yourself through life. Your feelings, thoughts, body and behavior are all affected. You may feel exhausted, unable to find pleasure in things you used to enjoy. There are many causes for depression as well as behaviors that feed into and reinforce how you are feeling. Adult counseling can help you gain the insight and skills that will gradually allow you to feel better equipped to deal with the day to day routine of life, enhance relationships and make positive changes so that you can improve your quality of life.

… A Relationship Issue

A partner in life (whether married or not) is someone we rely on to be there for us – emotionally and physically. When you feel disconnected from your partner, fear can set in, and the longer you feel this way, the more negative your interactions can become. Adult counseling to address relationship issues is complex. In addition to other goals we will identify in our sessions, you will work to reestablish the respect and trust needed to change how you relate to one another. With my guidance, you can discover healthier patterns of communication and behavior that will allow you to create the life you want, together.

But, you may still have questions or concerns about adult counseling…

Therapy can be expensive. I’m not sure I can afford it…

I have been in your shoes, expressing the same concern. And, the answer I came to was that I couldn’t afford not to do it. Adult counseling is an investment, in yourself, your emotional well-being and your quality of life. Living in or with distress, struggling with emotional pain and feeling unsatisfied in your life can lead to costly issues down the road, from strained relationships and unresolved emotional pain to continuing to struggle with managing day to day expectations and commitments.

I’m afraid that what we uncover will force me to deal with things that are rooted in the past. I just want to be happy now.

Perhaps your situation will allow you to resolve your difficulty and find relief without having to spend a lot of time examining your early life history and experiences. The truth is, we won’t know that until we begin our work together. I want and need to hear about the here and now. From there, if I feel it could be important to look at your early history, we would make the decision whether or not to discuss it together.

I’ve worked with a therapist before and it wasn’t as helpful as I’d hoped. How do I know you can help me?

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of finding the “right fit” when working with a therapist in adult counseling. It’s critical we lay the foundation for trust and safety, so that when you discuss your goals, progress or other concerns that may arise, you are comfortable and able to speak honestly. At any point in our work together you will be able to decide if you would prefer to stop.

For over two decades I have worked to improve individual and family issues, resulting in positive change and personal growth. Establishing trust, relationship and effective communication by listening to your story is the foundation for our productive therapeutic work together.

It is possible to find relief from the challenge you are currently facing …
